Life Lately

I'm guessing this post is going to take more than one sitting to write it...because my 'sittings' are rather short these days. ;)

-We have finally transitioned G to her crib and pack and play instead of cosleeping. To be honest, as she approaches one year we're realizing that she's just simply a very difficult sleeper no matter where she is. She was waking up 6-10 times a night in our bed to nurse (which at least I didn't have to get up and we both fell back to sleep quickly) and now in the crib or PNP she's waking up 4-6 times a night and I'm only nursing her two of those times. The whole nighttime thing is just grueling and takes me to the end of my rope mentally and physically and emotionally at times, but I try to step back, look at the big picture, and either tell myself to offer it up and give it to God or to remember it won't last forever and I *might* even miss those midnight snuggles someday. ;)

-Man, I'm tired just thinking about it all right now and I'm having trouble thinking of what else to write...because that seems like our life right now, ha.

-But there's Poldark. So one of the perks of no longer cosleeping is that my husband and I get back some quality time together in the evening! We were big Downton Abbey fans and were sad to see the series end, but we've recently picked up the PBS Masterpiece series Poldark, based on the books. Have you seen it? What are your thoughts? We were unsure the first few episodes and the characters are pretty flawed at times...but we're getting hooked just like I did with DA. Episode 4 was sooo good and we both had teary eyes at the end! Would love to hear your favorite period dramas or series in the comments!

-We bought our very first grill this past weekend! So exciting! We had a hand-me-down charcoal grill from my brother-in-law and it worked well and made delish food but we finally splurged on a gas grill that has much more surface area as well. I'm so looking forward to trying new things on it as well as the classics-- I really want to try grilling pizzas!!

Funny story about our purchase...we couldn't find anyone with a truck to borrow so we ended up renting the Home Depot truck (did you know they have that service? Pretty inexpensive, too!). I drove home with the baby while P drove home with the grill (his baby??). I helped him unload it and then I went to take the baby upstairs for her nap and he left to drop off the truck...

And then he called me when he got there because he realized he would need me to come pick him up and bring him back home!! We're so sleep deprived we didn't even think about that part!! hahaha!!

-Inspired by Humorous Homemaking, I have begun a weekly Kitchen Day, where I spend a large chunk of my time in the kitchen making 'non-dinner' items like muffins or granola or boiling eggs or prepping produce for the week. I am loving it!! I also designated a Laundry Day, Cleaning Day, and Grocery Day for the week. Beforehand, I had been doing those things as needed whenever they came up (throw in a load of laundry here and there, sweep the kitchen when I saw too many crumbs, etc.) but I am really liking to focus on one thing each day and to do it well-- and then to forget about it until the following week, haha! What are your favorite ways to do chores? Are you a routines and schedules person or a procrastinating person or somewhere in between?

-We've done a lot of traveling this month for family gatherings, holidays, and weddings but it has gone fairly well. It's been so much fun to see G interacting more with cousins and friends. Her first birthday party is coming up and we're so excited to host our family and friends here. I've gotten a few ideas on Pinterest without going overboard and decided to do an ice cream theme (even though we're dairy free, lololol....yeah, not really.) Supposedly, she is supposed to outgrow the dairy sensitivity by age one...but we're almost there and she's still getting nasty diaper rashes anytime I have milk products. Let me tell you, it's getting verrrrrry old in the summertime when I just want to eat all the ice cream, all the cheese, and all the yogurt and cream cheese, and did I mention ice cream? But it's a small thing in the big picture, and we're so grateful she doesn't have any true, chronic diseases.

-Naptime's almost over, so that's all for now, friends. Give me some comment love and tell me all about your summer. :)

Yes, I will do just about anything for some free Chick-fil-a food...
Cow Appreciation Day 2017. So fun. ;)

The Donuts

Since a couple of you commented about the donuts, I thought I'd share the recipe! It's so, so easy, I'm almost tempted to pretend it's this complicated, secret recipe.

But we'll keep it real. It's a cake mix!! The only difference is you use a few less eggs. My favorite thing about the recipe is that you can choose different cake mix flavors. My goal is to let our kids/family choose flavors for holidays and birthdays-- like maybe baby G will want cherry chip or another child would choose funfetti. And then there's always red velvet for Christmas or spice cake for the Fall. The possibilities are endless!

Here's the deets:

1 cake mix
1/4 cup oil
1 cup of water
1 egg

Mix and pour into sprayed donut pans (I got mine from Bed, Bath, and Beyond and they are nonstick Wilton brand). Bake at 400 for around 10 minutes. They are fairly cake-y and I do want to try my hand at a from-scratch recipe sometime to see if I can make them a little more dense, but my hubby thought these were amazing and raved about them. So as long as he's happy. ;) For the frosting, I did a quick glaze with milk (almond milk in my case) and powdered sugar. You could also add a touch of butter or vanilla for additional flavor. For the chocolate frosting I did the glaze just mentioned but added melted chocolate chips. That frosting was heavenly, esp. when it hardened somewhat in the fridge. Don't forget the sprinkles on top!

Tuesday Talk #36: Summer Adventures Have Begun

Normally I abide by the rules when it comes to seasons-- you know, spring begins March 21st, fall arrives September 21st, etc. But there's something about summer that just doesn't want to play by the rules. It can't wait for June 21st. So in my mind, it's already here! Let the summertime adventures begin! :)

P. and I are trying to get a lot of our traveling and visiting in this month since next month I'll be a little more limited to the area according to my doctor. This past weekend, we enjoyed a visit to my husband's brother and his family in central Ohio. Despite a short thunderstorm, it was a gorgeous sunny weekend and we loved exploring a local park, swimming in their backyard pool, and just catching up. My hubby and his brother are hilarious when they get together, so it's always a treat to watch their battles of quick wit. They're also dog people, so we brought the Little Dog along to play with his doggie cousins.

Here are a few pictures of our time. And here is a recipe that I made for dessert to share. (I LOVE fresh berry season!!) Give me some comment love, sweet friends. I'd be delighted to hear what you're up to this month-- any traveling adventures or summer treat recipes?! :)

Look at that blue sky!

They conquered Big Rock!

Tuesday Talk # 21: Another Year Older

Last week I celebrated my twenty-ninth birthday. One more year of the twenties ahead. Craziness! I'm soaking it up. ;) Actually, several of my friends (including my hubby) are in their thirties now, so I don't think next year's birthday will be a tragic event by any means. But still. I'm a little sentimental about the last year to close this decade.

Anyway.

So it was an amazing birthday. I had very little expectations for it, considering it was on a weekday and a work day. My husband convinced me I should let him make dinner and I happily agreed. Not only did he make dinner, but he had trails of rose petals starting in the garage when I arrived home and parked my car and leading to the dinner table, a few gifts, a dozen fresh roses, and even a cute little setup with our little black bear stuffed animal (honeymoon souvenir from Gatlinburg) holding a rose and a special message for me. He's so darn creative and romantic, he puts me to shame! Dinner was delicious: fettucine alfredo and roasted asparagas (I think I finally found a vegetable I want to eat during pregnancy--sooo good!). He invited my brother as a surprise dinner guest and a friend to stop by later in the evening. Thank you, Jesus, for such a loving husband.

Other delights of the day included non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice from a friend, a cookie cake and card from my coworkers, several texts and cards and voicemails from loved ones, and later on the weekend a visit from two girlfriends to catch up and make cards together. Nothing like a birthday to make you feel all warm and cozy and loved. I think my expectations decrease as an adult when it comes to birthdays so that makes each sweet kindness from others all the more special.

What are your favorite ways to celebrate your birthday?

Currently // vol. 2

Linking up with Gold and Bloom and Anne in Residence to take a look at the little things in life currently...

Sending // Bills! It seems like they all come at once. Our property taxes were due and it's always painful to send that large check, but we're so thankful for our happy home and the money to pay our taxes on it. God always seems to provide and we continually pray that He be Lord of our finances.

Eating // Leftover oven-fried chicken. I thawed some drumsticks from the freezer, coated them with a delicious mix of Panko, flour, and spices and baked them in the oven in a stick of butter for some extra crispiness. We both enjoyed our 'Southern-style' meal, including my first attempt at homemade baked beans.

Dreaming // of Spring. We've had some unusually warm weather the past week or two, the snow has melted, and it feels like Spring is on its way! I know we have awhile to go but I can't help but dream of green grass and beautiful flowers and singing birds and sunshine. It's so gorgeous when the world awakens with new life.

Smelling // Everything. There's something about pregnancy that heightens your senses. This is both good and bad. One night I could have sworn there were onions on my pillow...

Hearting // The month of February. I always get so excited about it. I love Valentine's Day (even when I was single!). It's just so pretty with the pinks and reds and lace and roses-- and chocolate helps, too. ;) Then there's my birthday, too, which I tend to celebrate the whole month according to my husband, friends, and family. My birthday wishes? Card-making party with friends, organizing the basement with my husband, and a big fat German Chocolate cake.

What are you currently up to, dear friends?

Quick Takes Friday (on a Saturday) [vol. 20]

seven quick takes friday 2

Happy weekend, friends!! It's a rainy day here but the temps are climbing to the 80's today so I'm going to order some sunshine and some outdoor time this afternoon!!

What's new with you? How was your week? Here's what I've been up to in pictures...

--1--

Don't mind my loooong arm...it didn't look like that in the square instagram camera, haha!!
My dad invited me to a coffee date this morning!! So beautiful to have this one-on-one time
as his single daughter before I become his married daughter! He is amazing, so blessed
to have such a solid father in my life. I know his love and support are what helped keep me
on the right path in life-- in education and career decisions, in my spiritual life, and even
in chastity-- I knew I was loved by my dad and did not need to seek it in unhealthy ways
from other men. Thank you, Jesus, for this gift.

--2--

Baby K is peeking through the front of the stroller...it's like a Where's Waldo picture but I'm giving you the hint.
My sister and I took her three littles to our town's lilac festival last weekend! I'm treasuring these purposeful moments with friends and family. And I really can't get enough of my always-joyful nephews and niece.

--3--

Speaking of lilacs, I received this one five years ago at the first festival I went to. It was the same year I moved out of my parents' home into my apartment (fresh from a broken engagement, too). I planted it and cared for it these last several years and this is the FIRST year it BLOOMED!! What a beautiful gift to have it bloom the year I'm getting married. If you're struggling, don't give up! Keep hoping, keep persevering, keep watering your lilac...life will bloom for you. God is at work in the soil.

--4--

Enjoying my last days of coffee on this deck in the morning. Oh, the memories at this sweet little place!!

--5--

But...joy of joys...

The front porch of our new home!

I'll have a new coffee place in a month!

--6--

Lots of burlap, lace, and chalkboards. Thanks, Pinterest!

I'm so done with society's expectations of a wedding. As we near our day, I'm grateful we choose to do a lot of things ourselves. It added memories and subtracted costs. :) And though it's been tough to swim against the current of the wedding industry, there's a sweet joy in focusing on simplicity and the Sacrament of marriage. Here's a sample picture of our reception table decorations (on my carpet instead of the linen tablecloth ;) ).

--7--

The babies are just chilling out on their "deck" to the left of the nest.

If you follow me on Instagram, you've seen my posts of this robin's nest and babies! The nest was just outside my sliding door, so I had the most fun watching all the stages of this life cycle-- from the momma on her eggs to the babies outgrowing their nest! What a miracle! Yet another delight during my last spring here...a small gift from my Heavenly Father, perhaps.

--Bonus!--

Thought I'd share a peek of our engagement pictures. We had a lot of fun with these! I'm so happy with our photographer!

Have a lovely weekend, friends!

7 Quick Takes [vol. 15]

So I thought maybe if I didn't put the word "Friday" in the title of this post, you guys might forget this is supposed to be a Friday post, not a Saturday one...but then I added in the picture logo and realized it's hopeless. I'm late. I'm cheating. It's Saturday and these are my quick takes.

--1--

I love these cozy Saturday mornings at home. Slept in (a rare occurrence), drank coffee like it was water in a desert, and just slowly enjoyed the morning with prayer, books, and pumpkin waffles. Four girlfriends came over last night for homemade pizza, visiting a nursing home with our pets, and then girl talk over hot chocolate until 1 in the morning. I'm always refreshed after being with such inspiring souls.

A, Me, and R

--2--

My roommate GOT MARRIED a month ago and moved to NORTH DAKOTA! Craziness. It feels like it happened so fast the reality still hasn't set in! We worked such different shifts, I think the adjustment has been easier than I anticipated. She worked 5pm-2am (poor girl) and I work 8am-5pm, so we didn't see each other very often even when we lived together. But still! I can't believe she's across the country now! I'll miss our random cooking nights, movie nights, and homemaking adventures. She and her husband are so cute together and very much in love. Pictures, you ask?

How sweet are they?!

--3--

I was looking for a new roommate (any takers??) but in the meantime, I've been rearranging...and I'm loving the extra space! I now have a craft and reading room, with a bookshelf, all my scrapbooking/cardmaking supplies, and a futon in it for any overnight guests. It's perfectly cozy and purposeful. I can't wait to make Christmas cards in it! (and be able to close the door on the mess until I'm finished with the project!)

Bookshelf is where I'm standing, and there's a card table to the side for crafting

--4--

Second snow today. Just a dusting but very pretty to see the swirling snowflakes as they fell!

This was the first snow a few weeks ago

--5--

I saw a funny Facebook link on "dog shaming" pictures when your puppy misbehaves. So adorably funny! Since my Little Dog has episodes of misbehavior from time to time, I decided to try one out with him...and it didn't take long for him to provide the perfect opportunity. What do you think?

--6--

Road trip! A few weeks ago K. and I went to Holmes County, OH (Amish country, my friends!!) to visit our sweet friend L. We spent the night at her gorgeous home and then enjoyed a Saturday of shopping in the quaint town of Berlin, finishing it off at a yummy Amish restaurant. On Friday night, we had a little trouble and the 4 hour trip turned into a 5 hour trip due to *ahem* some navigator issues...(that would be me). In my defense, it is entirely mostly possibly probably not Mapquest's fault.

This is how their directions read:

Take interstate 75 South.                                    2.5 miles / total trip 50.5 miles

Now is it not completely understandable that I would accidentally see the 50 miles instead of the 2 miles and direct K. to drive 50 miles on interstate 75?

Well, that's what I did.

And so she happily set the trip tracker for 50 miles and we didn't begin to look for the exit until we were a good 45 miles past it! It's not a good thing when the gas station attendant looks at you blankly when you ask how far you are from your destination. ("Never heard of that town...")

All's well that ends well. (Right, K??) My kind, map-reading boyfriend answered the SOS phone call and got us back on track.

Mmmm...we love Amish peanut butter. Nevermind that it's comprised of five different types of sugar/sweeteners.

--7--

Last but not least, have a beautiful Thanksgiving. Families aren't perfect, turkeys overcook, and we can get lonely in a crowd of people...but there is always, always, always something to be thankful for. :) May our Lord bless you with a grateful heart, His abundance grace, and His unending love this week. I'm hugging you right now!

{On} the Beaten Trail...An Adventure in Pictures

That creatively adventurous man of mine made reservations at a stable...

Someone is almost more excited than I am about the prospect!

Beautiful. Just beautiful. Deep in the country, my heart is swelling.

Can I move here?

Checking the radar and waiting out the pouring rain!
Meet Willie, my new friend.

Ready to go!

P. and Abel bonding.
The weather provided a unique trail ride during the next hour
...an elusive mix of sunshine, dusk, drizzle, and mist.
A country girl, a city boy,
and a great memory.

7 Quick Takes [vol. 11]

I'm on a roll here with the blogging thing. Three times in one week. (Yes, the quote on Wednesday counts!) Better keep rolling with my quick takes before I lose motivation...because it's a Friday night and I'm ready to party ready for bed!

--1--

I think my beta fish Jonah is dying. Now this may seem insignificant to most of you, but this little guy has a special place in my heart. He makes my heart happy and he was my first pet here in the apartment. I've never had a fish live this long--2.5 years--and you get kinda attached. I'm glad my roommate is home for the weekend, because I don't think I'll be able to...well...you know...send him to his watery grave. Would it be inappropriate to bury a fish in the garden or do you think his fishy-soul would be happier in water?

--2--

Flowers are abounding in our apartment right now. I LOVE it. Flowers are one of my most favorite things on earth. One giant bouquet is from a gentleman who came to the pregnancy center this week and gave us plants and flowers from his mother-in-law's funeral. He supported what we do and wanted to share those with us. How sweet is that? The second vase holds a lush bunch of pink peonies that my mom picked from her neighbors' (with permission, of course!). She surprised me by bringing them to my cardiology workplace today! Drinking in their beauty tonight...

--3--

Brogan, our Little Dog, escaped tonight. He slipped out the door when my sister and her kids were leaving this evening. I kid you not-- this dog looks like a mix between a rabbit and a white-tailed deer whenever he escapes (yep, it's not the first time). He skips and bounds and bounces through the yards and field quite merrily. If it wasn't so maddening, it would actually be pretty funny. All is well now. He's safe inside again, crashed on his pillow-bed, dreaming of adventures in the great outdoors.

--4--

I'm so happy to be home tomorrow. I have loads of things I want to do. The farmer's market, garage sale-ing, shopping, cleaning and organizing, morning Mass, running, breakfast at the coffee shop, bike riding...somehow I'm not sure I'll fit it all in but I love knowing such an empty slate of a day lies before me. My daddy's birthday is tomorrow, so that's one thing written on the slate. Maybe some ice cream cake and a boat ride on the river. Mmm...June is here and summer is not far behind.

--5--

I shut my thumb in the car door a couple weeks ago. I know. I haven't done that since I was a little kid. But let me tell you, when it happened I really wanted to act like a little kid and scream and cry. Whew. It was painful. Instead I calmly (debatable) asked P. to get the cooler back out of the car so I could promptly stick my hand in the ice (we were camping with my family). I've never broken a bone before...until now. Turns out the tip is fractured. So I've been wearing this nifty splint on my left thumb for the past 10 days (and guess who happens to be left-handed).

--6--

Uh-oh. Losing motivation. Distracted by a hungry tummy. Thinking of the Pinterest recipe in the freezer ("ice cream" made from blended bananas and cocoa powder.)

--7--

This one really deserves more than a Quick Take number, however honorable that may be. I'll be sharing more details in the future, because I'm still a bit in awe that the many. crazy. details worked out.

I'm going to Haiti in July.

And because of the multiple roadblocks that have been cleared by God throughout the past few months...my greatest desire is to completely offer myself and this mission trip to Him.

So more on that later.

And hey-- you dear, beautiful, heart-warming friends. Thanks for your comments and your bloggie-world friendship. I enjoy your own blog posts, your comment-love on mine, your support that transcends internet connections, and even you readers who remain silent but present. Thank you.

Have a beautiful weekend.

Vote for Me?

So I got a fun little email from Bonnie at A Knotted Life. It turns out one of you kind readers nominated my blog for one of her Sheenazing Blogger Awards! How fun is that? Thank you! It totally brightened my day!

And now I'm supposed to invite you to vote for me by going to her site between Tuesday, the 29th, and Thursday, the 31st. (But it feels really weird, to ask for votes like that.)

I would make a bad politician.

But if you're into that kind of thing, here's the link. And if that one doesn't work, you can go to the original post.

Life is Beautiful is nominated under the category "Best Underappreciated Blog--best kept secret of the internet." That's really sweet, you guys. Thank you. And if you do decide to vote, thank you for that, too.

Have a happy Tuesday!

7 Quick Takes [vol. 6]

I just wrote over at the Catholic Young Woman about choices and New Year's goals and such. And on that note, I'm thinking I have three options right now. One, clean up after the tornado that swept through my house this week (where else could all of this messiness have come from??). Two, close the laptop and go crawl under my covers and sleep the long, beautiful sleep of a Friday-night-with-nowhere-to-be-the-next-morning. Three, bravely continue on with this post despite the nagging voice that says I should clean and the drowsy voice that says I should snooze. Any votes here?

I'm going to go with option three. Here we go!

--1--

I love writing. I love blogging. And I can't express enough how much I love meeting all of you through emails and comments and such. BUT, it's really hard getting back into blogging for some reason! I have things I want to write, thoughts I want to share...but with this crazy new schedule, my mind is fried and my free time is waning. (I know. I simply need to prioritize. It's just so much easier to pop in an NCIS or browse Pinterest when I'm ready to kick back.)

--2--

My Christmas tree is still in my living room. The lights and ornaments are off, I just need to muster some super-human strength and carry the 7-foot monster into the garage. I love Christmas...but it's time. Even with the Church's longer-than-the-secular-world season of Christmas...it's over. I want to hang on to the beauty of the season, but after a certain point, the decor just becomes tacky, you know?

--3--

The crisis pregnancy center training is going well. It's overwhelming. And challenging. But I expected both of those things, so they don't bother me too much. The time crunch is probably what's taking the most time to get used to. I'm learning to be Miss Efficient with meal planning as well as switching gears between two jobs, but sometimes I'm just ready to get off the merry-go-round. But I'm thankful. And in the midst of the craziness, I try to offer it to God, trusting that He'll use whatever I give Him...even if it's a frazzled young woman hoping her library books aren't overdue, that she remembered to fill up the car with gas, and that the dog didn't eat her table centerpiece--again.

--4--

Speaking of craziness, I made Crazy Crust Pizza last weekend. Have you heard of the whole crazy crust idea with recipes? Pretty nifty stuff. No kneading or rising required. It took less than an hour, start to finish, for some tasty pizza on a Sunday night. Look for the recipe on here soon. I'll be sharing. :)

--5--

I went to a scrapbooking getaway with my friend K. Last year I went with her and we even stayed in the hotel for a true getaway. This year, for time and money reasons, I only went one day but we still had a great time making greeting cards!

a roomful of women and creativity!

Gotta have some cozy slippers when you're crafting...

--6--

I'm going on the March for Life next weekend in Washington D.C. I've been on local marches but not the Big One. I'm excited to be in D.C. again as well as joining the thousands supporting life in all its stages and the true rights and dignity of women. I wish the media would cover this incredible event...(and not just so I'd have a chance of being on TV! ;) )

--7--

Please keep a friend in prayer who had surgery today for a brain tumor. He is a solid young man of God who bravely took up this cross with faith and determination. My heart both hurts for him and admires him. I'd really appreciate if you'd say a prayer for his strength mentally, physically, and emotionally as he begins the process of recovery and rehab, that the Lord will be tangibly near him and grant him a full healing.

And on that note, I think it's time for me to have some prayer time myself, before these sleepy eyes can't focus. (The dishes may just have to wait until tomorrow.) Peace and grace, friends. May He bless your weekend.

7 Quick Takes Friday: Christmas Style [vol. 4]

Ahh...it's Friday. As I was putting my coat on at work this evening, I had a painful flashback of the many Fridays in the past when I would race out the door, ready to see P. for a date. And as much as I wish that were the case tonight, I do have to say there's something comfy-cozy about this Friday-night-in. Organic frozen pizza in the oven...Brogan curled up on my lap...and lots of good books and DVDs...
There are also a lot of other happenings in my life right now besides the heartache (several good happenings, too!) but for this week I'm going to do my quick takes with a bit of a twist. Instead of seven updates, I decided to share seven Christmas-decorated areas of my home. The updates will come in time but for now...I hope you enjoy!

--1--

I love the fun colors of these ornaments...and they match the bright colors of our kitchen!

--2--

Just seeing these cute little guys makes me want to bake cookies :)

--3--

Love this one. So much meaning. The sign above the manger says, "God Keeps His Promises."
He did then. And He still does.

--4--

Who wants to wash her hands with Sugar Cookie soap and then put on Peppermint Candy Cane lotion?

--5--

So cozy.

--6--

Coffee or tea? It always tastes better in cute mugs!

--7--

I couldn't find my Advent wreath this year...so thanks to an idea from my creative sister,
I have one now.

 --And just for fun--

Whew! Christmas decorating makes me tired! (Check out his festive velvet jingle-bell collar)
